Which Altar?

June 16, 2012

I’ll never forget the first time I preached. I had my suit on, my grandfathers tie on, about 5 pages of notes on a subject that I was very familiar with, and about 60 or 70 people praying for me. I was the picture of being prepared. Then something happened that I never would have expected about 15 minutes into the sermon……… I was done.

Sometimes we bow down at the altar of our own preparation. I have struggled with this more than almost anything since I began teaching and preaching. I was famous when I began teaching Sunday school for having at least 4 pages of notes. It was my safety net. But more recently I have started using maybe half a page of notes and that’s about it.

But now I try and following the leading of God more. It seems like the less I depend on me the more He shows up. (What a novel idea huh?) I have stopped trying to go to the altar of preparedness and started going to the altar of God. I wonder if anyone else out there feels that way?

This is not me taking a stand against notes. I know some people feel that notes take God out of the teaching and preaching. A preacher I really look up to once told me, ” you need to be prepared to be used of God “. So that’s what I do.
